If you wonder what is a pocket door, Special Pocket Door Service King City will explain it all. A pocket door is a special type of sliding door which disappears into a pocket in the wall. Fitting double pocket doors is a fantastic way to improve the look of your home and Special Pocket Door Service King City will come to you 24/7 to install one for you. This kind of door is a great space saving door design which opens without obstructing the passage-way at all. A pocket door is an interesting type of door which opens and closes by sliding on a set of rails. Unlike other sliding doors however this door is designed to slide inside a pocket which is built into the wall. This is great for areas short on space as a pocket door can be opened and completely moved out of the way. This makes it possible for a small opening to become a fully functional and useful door. There are few steps to follow in order to install the door, from removing a wall portion to actually installing the door. We are here 24/7, fully stocked with all supplies and tools needed to help. In case you want to go ahead and do it yourself, you will need to remove a section from your wall in order to allow the door to disappear in the pocket. After that, follow the steps:
Inspect the wall where you are installing the pocket door. Make sure that the wall is not structural or load bearing. This is important, because you’re cutting a slot in the wall. If it is load bearing, you will need to install a lintel over the two gaps in the wall. Check the position where the slots are located to ensure that there is no plumbing or wiring behind them. If there is plumbing or wiring, it will instantly make the project much more complicated. Use the reciprocating saw to cut through the dry-wall in between the studs in the wall. Remove the partition header and cut the studs. This will create a pocket which is large enough for your pocket door to fit inside. Many home owners like to have a double pocket door, so the instructions are for them. Check the measurements of the door and then install a new stud. You will then be able to use this stud to secure the header in the right place. Cut the bottom plate to size and install this on the floor. Cut the channel runners to size by using a hack saw and then fix it to the floor. It is very important that the channel is perfectly level, as this will help the door to open and close smoothly. If there are any problems with the level, it will stop the door from running smoothly. The floor brackets then need to be fixed into the metal plate and the door can be mounted in the tracks. The wheeled part of the door can be mounted inside the tracks. The second door now needs to be repeated in the same way so that they are both mounted and able to shut flush with one another. Minor adjustments should be possible if the doors do not quite meet level. If you are fitting a set of pocket doors which can close themselves, you will need to fit the weights into the channel and also link the doors together so that they both open together at the same time. Finish the wall by attaching the dry-wall to the wall using screws and adhesive. Once the dry-wall is fixed onto the wall, skim the wall using some plaster and finish the wall using whatever wall covering that you intend to use.
In the case you have decided you want to install a single pocket door in your home you have probably done your up-front planning and made sure you know what you are going to do with any infrastructure inside your chosen wall. You have found a good quality pocket door kit that can handle the weight of your chosen door. All that is left to do is install the door. Here is how to install your pocket door. First hang some plastic sheets around the area where you will be working. Your first step is opening the wall and that’s going to generate lots of dust but the plastic will help contain it. Use your tape measure and mark the rough opening needed to install your new door. Be sure to make the opening a couple of inches wider and higher than your door requires. Make your opening by holding your reciprocating at a low angle and cut through the drywall along your markings. Once the dry-wall is removed, cut through the wall studs and remove them. The rule of thumb for frame height is 85 ¾”, however, check the instructions that came with your kit and follow them. Install your new header so the bottom is at 85 ¾” (or the appropriate height for your kit). The hardware track is installed on the bottom of your header. Follow the directions in your kit and cut it to length with your hack saw. Next install the track ensuring it is level by placing shims where needed. For your pocket door to work properly the opening needs to be level, plumb and square. You can check for plumb and square by running pieces of string from opposite corners to form a large letter ‘X’. If the strings just touch other at the intersection, the opening is perfect. However, if there is a gap of more than 1/8” inch between them, you need to adjust your studs to get make your frame square. Once the opening is perfect you can install your door kit split studs. These are thin metal wrapped wooden studs that come with you kit. After installation, they leave an open channel for the door to ride in. The combination of metal wrapping on wood provides strength to the studs while their wooden make up allows you to attach the drywall using screws. Attach the split studs to the sole plate and header. Next mount the hanging brackets onto the top of the door and slide them into the track. Now, hook the hanging brackets on top of the door onto the wheel carriages and adjust them so the door hangs plumb. Finish the door assembly by installing the latches, pulls or lock you have selected. Complete your pocket door assembly by installing new dry-wall (screwed into the split studs – don’t use screws any longer than 1 ¼”), then tape and ‘mud’ it. After sanding, all that is left is to install the door jambs, trim casing and finally, paint your drywall.
If you have no kit and you want to do it on your own, installing a pocket door frame is actually not hard. With the right tools and pieces of equipment available you will be able to install a pocket door frame with relative ease. The first step is to nail the header into the frame and make sure that it’s fully square with the edge of the door. This needs to be as accurate and level as possible because any mistakes could prevent the door from opening and closing properly. The pocket door frame now needs to be positioned into the rough opening. If this does not fit in the opening then you will need to do some extra work on the opening. Use wood shims under and around the frame to ensure that the tracks run perfectly level and that the door jambs are vertical. The track must be level otherwise it will be difficult to open and close the door, it will also mean that the door will not stay in the same place. Normally everything that you need will be included with the pocket door frame kits, however you will need to purchase a door handle and various other accessories extra. Dry-wall now needs to be installed over the door frame and the brackets should then be removed. All four edges of the door must be sealed to prevent the door from warping and becoming damaged. The hanger plates should be positioned on top of the door and positioned 2 inches from the door edges. Use the clips provided to hold everything together. Position the doors by lifting them into the sliding track. The doors will fit easily onto the tracks and should slide freely. Ensure that the doors are positioned properly so that they are level and fit into the tracks properly. Test that the doors open and close properly. If any adjustments are required then you may need to take the doors off the tracks in order to adjust and change them.
