A door that will not close properly is more than an annoyance. An exterior door that does not latch is a security risk and lets heat escape; an interior door that swings open on its own or rubs the frame wears out fast; and a commercial door that will not close can leave a business unsecured overnight. The good news is that almost every “door won’t close” problem comes down to a short list of causes. This guide walks through the ten most common ones we see in Toronto homes and businesses, how to tell which one you have, what you can safely try yourself, and when to call a professional.

Door hinge repair
Door hinge repair

First, figure out what the door is actually doing

“Won’t close” can mean several different things, and each points to different causes:

  • It rubs or sticks before it reaches the frame.
  • It closes but will not latch — the latch hits the strike plate instead of going in.
  • It swings open by itself after you close it.
  • It springs back as if something is pushing it.
  • A commercial door stops short or slams instead of closing gently.

Watch the door closely and note where it catches. That observation alone often tells you the cause.

The 10 most common causes

1. Loose hinge screws

The most common cause by far. When the screws in the top hinge loosen, the door tilts and the latch side drops, rubbing the frame or missing the strike. Tighten every hinge screw. If a screw just spins, the hole is stripped; a longer screw into the wall framing usually fixes it. See door hinge repair in Toronto.

2. Worn or bent hinges

Old hinges wear at the knuckles and pins, and heavy doors can bend hinge leaves. Worn hinges let the door sag even when the screws are tight, and replacement is the fix. For heavy doors, heavy-duty or ball-bearing hinges last much longer. See door frame and hinge support.

3. Misaligned strike plate

If the door closes against the frame but will not latch, look at the strike plate. Scratch marks above or below the opening show which way the latch is missing. Small misalignments can be corrected by adjusting or filing the strike; bigger ones mean the door has dropped and the hinges need attention first.

4. Swelling from humidity

Wood doors and frames absorb moisture in humid Toronto summers and during wet fall weather. A door that sticks only in certain seasons is usually swelling. Planing a door that is only temporarily swollen can leave a gap later, so it is worth finding out whether the problem is swelling or sagging before removing wood. If you do plane a door, seal the bare edge afterwards.

5. A frame that has shifted

Houses settle, and frost moves foundations slightly. A frame that is out of square makes the door rub in one corner and leave a gap in another. Minor shifts can be corrected with shims and hinge adjustments; a badly distorted or damaged frame may need repair. See exterior door frame repair.

6. Paint build-up

Years of paint on the door edge and frame stops add up. Doors that were painted without being removed often stick at the stops or the latch. Careful stripping of the excess paint along the edges and stops usually solves it.

7. Weatherstripping that is too thick

New or replaced weatherstripping can be too thick, especially on the hinge side, so the door springs back when you try to close it. The right profile compresses to seal without pushing the door open. If the door “bounces” after new seals were installed, this is the likely cause.

8. Threshold or floor problems

A raised threshold, a new floor, a thick mat or a heaved concrete step can make the bottom of the door drag. Adjustable thresholds can often be lowered; otherwise the door may need to be trimmed at the bottom.

9. Latch or lock problems

Sometimes the door closes fine but the latch itself is sticky, broken or worn, so it does not extend and catch. A failing latch or lockset needs replacing. If the deadbolt will not slide in, the door has usually shifted — see lock change and repair.

10. Door closer problems (commercial and some residential)

On commercial doors, the closer controls how the door closes. A closer out of adjustment, leaking oil or set too weak will leave the door short of latching or let it slam. Closers need seasonal adjustment because cold weather changes their behaviour. See door closer repairs in Toronto and business entry door repair.

Quick diagnosis checklist

  • Rubs at the top latch corner? Loose or worn top hinge.
  • Rubs at the bottom? Sagging hinges, threshold or floor.
  • Closes but won’t latch? Strike misalignment or latch failure.
  • Sticks only in summer? Swelling.
  • Springs back open? Thick weatherstripping, hinge binding or paint build-up.
  • Swings open by itself? Door or frame out of plumb.
  • Commercial door slams or stops short? Closer adjustment or failure.

What you can safely try yourself

  • Tighten all hinge and strike plate screws.
  • Replace one short screw in the top hinge with a long screw into the framing.
  • Clean and lubricate the hinges and the latch.
  • Check for paint build-up and clean it off carefully.
  • Adjust an adjustable threshold.

Avoid planing or cutting a door, removing heavy exterior doors, or adjusting commercial closers unless you know what you are doing — mistakes there are expensive.

When to call a professional

  • The door still will not close after tightening the hinges.
  • The frame is cracked, rotted or visibly out of square.
  • It is a heavy exterior, steel or commercial door.
  • The door was forced in a break-in.
  • A commercial door with a closer or panic hardware will not latch.
  • An exterior door will not lock tonight.

For urgent situations, see emergency door repair and door repair after a break-in.

Repair or replace?

Most closing problems are fixed with adjustments, new hinges, a strike adjustment or a new latch. If the door itself is warped or split, or the frame is rotted, replacement may be the better choice. Our guide on choosing a new front door explains the options, and our door replacement team can advise on site.

Seasonal problems

Toronto’s seasons make door problems come and go. Doors that stick in August and gap in January are reacting to humidity and temperature. For cold-weather issues — drafts, frozen locks, deadbolts that will not line up — read our winter door problems guide. For sliding and patio doors, see patio door repair.

Different doors, different problems

Exterior front and back doors

Exterior doors are heavier and face the weather, so sagging hinges, frame movement and threshold problems are the usual culprits. Because they protect the house, a door that will not latch or lock should be fixed right away rather than “living with it” through the winter.

Interior doors

Interior doors are lighter, but they still sag, swell and pick up paint build-up. A bedroom or bathroom door that swings open or will not stay shut is usually a hinge or strike adjustment — often a quick fix.

French doors and double doors

Pairs of doors depend on both leaves lining up with each other as well as with the frame. If one leaf sags, the astragal or the flush bolts stop lining up and the pair will not close tightly. Adjusting both leaves together is the key.

Sliding and pocket doors

Sliding doors that will not close fully usually have worn rollers, a dirty or damaged track, or a latch that has moved out of alignment. Pocket doors often come off their top track. See patio and sliding door repair.

Commercial doors

Commercial doors add closers, panic hardware and sometimes electric strikes or mag locks. If a fire-rated door will not self-close and latch, it should be fixed promptly, because the building depends on it to hold back smoke and fire. Storefront doors that drag or will not lock usually have worn pivots or hinges. See fire door installations and business door repair.

A simple door maintenance routine

Most closing problems build up slowly, so a few minutes of care twice a year prevents a lot of them:

  • Spring: tighten hinge and strike screws, clean and lubricate hinges and latches, check for swelling as humidity rises.
  • Fall: check weatherstripping and the threshold, make sure the deadbolt slides easily, and look for rot or rust at the bottom of exterior frames.
  • Any time: if a door starts rubbing, dragging or needing a push to latch, deal with it early — a loose hinge left alone can tear out of the frame.

Why fixing it early saves money

A door that does not close properly puts stress on everything around it. Slamming a sagging door to make it latch loosens the hinges further, splits the strike area of the frame and wears out the lock. What starts as a five-minute hinge adjustment can turn into frame repair or a new door if it is ignored for a few seasons. Getting the door checked as soon as it starts to misbehave is almost always the cheapest option.

Door repair across Toronto and the GTA

We fix doors that will not close or latch throughout Toronto, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Pickering, Newmarket, Burlington and Hamilton. See also local door repair Toronto, front door repair and commercial doors.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my door latch even though it closes?

Usually the latch no longer lines up with the strike plate because the door has dropped from loose or worn hinges, or the strike has shifted. Tightening the hinges or adjusting the strike usually fixes it.

Why does my door stick only in the summer?

Wood doors and frames absorb moisture in humid weather and swell. A door that sticks seasonally is usually swelling rather than sagging.

Can I fix a door that won’t close myself?

Often yes: tightening hinge screws, adding a long screw to the top hinge and cleaning the latch solve many cases. Frame problems, heavy exterior doors and commercial closers are best left to a professional.

Why does my door swing open by itself?

The door or frame is out of plumb, so gravity pulls the door open. Adjusting the hinges or re-hanging the door corrects it.

Why does my commercial door not close all the way?

The door closer is usually out of adjustment, too weak for the door, or leaking. Seasonal adjustment or closer replacement fixes it.

A new front door is one of the few home upgrades that improves security, comfort, energy use and curb appeal all at once. But walk into any showroom and the choices pile up fast: steel, fibreglass or wood; solid or with glass; single, with sidelights or double; and a long list of hardware options. This guide explains, in plain language, how to choose the right front door for a Toronto home — what each material does well, what Toronto weather does to doors, the signs your current door should be replaced instead of repaired, and what a proper installation involves.

Repair or replace your front door?

Before shopping for a new door, it is worth knowing whether you actually need one. Many front door problems — sticking, drafts, a deadbolt that will not line up — are caused by worn hinges, a shifted strike or tired weatherstripping, and can be fixed in a single visit. See our front door repair service and our guide to winter door problems.

Signs it is time to replace

  • The door is warped, split or delaminating and will not close square.
  • The bottom of the door or the frame is rotted or rusted through.
  • You feel cold air around the edges even after new weatherstripping.
  • Frost or condensation forms on the inside of the door in winter.
  • The door was damaged in a break-in and the slab itself is compromised.
  • The glass insert or sidelights have failed and the door is old anyway.
  • You simply want better security, insulation or a new look.

If several of these apply, replacement usually makes more sense than repeated repairs. Our door replacement in Toronto team can confirm on site.

Steel, fibreglass or wood: how the materials compare

Steel front doors

Steel doors are the most common choice in GTA homes. They have a steel skin over an insulated foam core, which makes them strong, secure and energy-efficient for the price.

Pros

  • Strong and resistant to forced entry.
  • Good insulation from the foam core.
  • Usually the most budget-friendly option.

Cons

  • Can dent if hit hard.
  • Scratches must be touched up to prevent rust.
  • The steel skin conducts cold, so poor weatherstripping shows up as frost along the edges.

Fibreglass front doors

Fibreglass doors are moulded composite skins over an insulated core, often textured to look like wood. They handle Toronto’s freeze-thaw cycles very well.

Pros

  • Do not rust, rot, warp or swell.
  • Resist dents better than steel.
  • Can be painted or stained for a wood look.
  • Excellent insulation.

Cons

  • Usually cost more than steel.
  • Very low-end fibreglass can crack under a hard impact.

Wood front doors

Solid wood or wood-clad doors offer the warmest, most traditional look and suit heritage homes in neighbourhoods across Toronto.

Pros

  • Beautiful, natural appearance.
  • Heavy and solid-feeling.
  • Can be refinished many times.

Cons

  • React to moisture: swelling, shrinking and warping.
  • Need regular finishing, especially on exposed entrances.
  • Usually the highest cost.

What Toronto weather does to front doors

Toronto swings from humid summers to winters well below freezing, with lots of freeze-thaw cycles in between. That is hard on doors:

  • Wood swells in humid weather and shrinks in dry indoor heat, so it may stick in one season and gap in another.
  • Steel gets very cold and shows frost if seals are worn.
  • Frames and sills take the most abuse from snow, slush and salt, which is why rot and rust usually start at the bottom of the frame.

Whatever door you choose, a well-sealed frame, a good threshold and quality weatherstripping matter as much as the door itself. If your frame is damaged, see exterior door frame repair.

Glass, sidelights and transoms

Glass brings light into the front hall but affects security and insulation.

  • Insulated glass units (double or triple pane) reduce heat loss and condensation.
  • Decorative and privacy glass lets light in without letting people see in.
  • Sidelights and transoms make an entrance feel larger but add more glass — and more potential weak points — near the lock.
  • Security tip: if glass is within reach of the lock, choose laminated or tempered glass and a quality deadbolt.

Hardware that matters

Locks

A quality deadbolt with a full-length throw is the single biggest security upgrade. Many homeowners also add a handleset or a smart lock at the same time. See lock change in Toronto.

Hinges

Heavy insulated doors need heavy-duty hinges, and the top hinge should be fastened with long screws into the wall framing. This keeps the door from sagging over time. See door hinge repair and door frame and hinge support.

Strike plates

A reinforced strike plate anchored with long screws makes a kicked-in door far less likely — one of the cheapest upgrades you can make during installation.

Weatherstripping and thresholds

Compression weatherstripping and an adjustable threshold keep out drafts and water. They should be checked and adjusted after the door settles in.

Pre-hung door or slab only?

A pre-hung door comes already mounted in its own frame with hinges, so the whole unit is installed into the opening. A slab is just the door, hung in your existing frame.

  • Choose pre-hung when the frame is rotted, damaged, out of square, or you want the best seal.
  • A slab can work when the existing frame is solid and square and you want to keep the trim.

How a professional front door installation works

  1. Measuring and assessment. The opening, frame, sill and swing are checked. Older Toronto homes often have non-standard sizes.
  2. Choosing the door and hardware. Material, glass, colour and locks are selected.
  3. Removal. The old door and frame are removed carefully to protect trim and walls.
  4. Setting the new unit. The door is installed level, plumb and square, shimmed and fastened, and the gaps are insulated.
  5. Sealing and hardware. Threshold, weatherstripping and locks are fitted and adjusted.
  6. Final check. The door must swing freely, latch easily, lock smoothly and seal all the way around.

See door installation in Toronto and recommended door replacements.

Front doors in condos and townhouses

Condo suite doors are usually fire-rated and must stay self-closing and latching, and many condo corporations control what the door looks like. Talk to your property manager before replacing a condo door. Townhouses often have more exposed entrances, so good weatherstripping and a solid threshold are especially important.

Budgeting for a new front door

We do not quote prices without seeing the door, because the final cost depends on the material, size, glass, frame condition, hardware and finishing. The biggest factors are:

  • Material (steel is usually the most economical, then fibreglass, then wood).
  • Glass inserts, sidelights and transoms.
  • Whether the frame must be replaced.
  • Custom sizes for older homes.
  • Locks and smart hardware.

Contact us for a quote based on your actual door.

Security features to look for

A front door is only as strong as its weakest point, and that is rarely the slab itself. When choosing a new door, look at the whole system:

  • Solid core or reinforced edges where the lock and hinges attach.
  • A deadbolt with a full one-inch throw and a hardened bolt.
  • A reinforced strike plate fastened with long screws into the wall framing.
  • Hinge-side reinforcement with long screws in at least the top hinge.
  • Safety glass in any glass panel or sidelight near the lock.
  • A wide-angle viewer or camera doorbell so you can see who is outside.

These details are often what stops a kick-in. If your current door has already been forced, read about door repair after a break-in.

Energy efficiency

An old front door with tired seals can be one of the biggest sources of drafts in a house. When comparing doors, look for an insulated core, insulated glass if the door has glass, compression weatherstripping on all sides, and an adjustable threshold. Energy-efficiency ratings help you compare products, but a careful installation — with the frame insulated and the door set perfectly square — is what makes the rating real in your home.

Style: matching the door to your home

Toronto has everything from Victorian semis and Edwardian brick houses to post-war bungalows, suburban two-storeys and modern infill. A few guidelines:

  • Heritage and older homes often suit panelled doors with a transom, in wood or a wood-look fibreglass.
  • Post-war bungalows look good with simple panel or craftsman-style doors.
  • Modern homes suit flush doors, long vertical glass lites and darker colours.
  • Colour: dark colours on steel or fibreglass doors in full sun can get very hot; check the manufacturer’s guidance, especially if you have a storm door.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by slab size only. Older openings are often non-standard; measure the frame, not just the old door.
  • Ignoring the frame. A new door in a rotted frame will not seal or stay secure.
  • Skipping the threshold. Water and drafts usually come in at the bottom.
  • Weak hardware. A great door with a cheap deadbolt and short strike screws is still easy to kick in.
  • Forgetting the swing and clearances. Check storm doors, railings and steps before choosing an in-swing or out-swing.

A professional assessment catches these issues before you order. See improving front doors in Toronto.

Do you still need a storm door?

Many older Toronto homes have a storm door in front of the main entry door. With a modern insulated steel or fibreglass door, a storm door is often optional: it adds a little protection from wind and snow, and lets you use a screen in summer. But a storm door with poor ventilation can trap heat against a dark-coloured door in direct sun and damage its finish, and a storm door with worn seals can trap moisture in winter. If you keep one, make sure its closer works, its seals are in good shape, and it can be vented in warm weather.

How long should a new front door last?

With a good installation and basic care, a quality steel or fibreglass door can serve for decades. Wood doors last just as long when they are refinished regularly. The parts that wear first are the weatherstripping, the threshold, the hinges and the lock — all of which can be replaced without replacing the door. A quick check every fall, before the first freeze, keeps a new door sealing and locking properly year after year.

We serve Toronto and the GTA

We repair and replace front doors across Toronto and the surrounding area, including Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Pickering, Newmarket, Burlington and Hamilton. For urgent problems see emergency door repair and door repair after a break-in.

Frequently asked questions

Is a steel or fibreglass front door better?

Both are good choices. Steel is strong, secure and economical; fibreglass resists dents, never rusts or rots and handles freeze-thaw cycles very well, usually at a higher price.

How long does a front door replacement take?

Most standard pre-hung front doors are installed in a single visit. Custom doors, sidelights and older homes with unusual openings can take longer.

Do I need to replace the frame too?

Not always. If the frame is solid, square and not rotted, a slab can be hung in it. If the frame is damaged or out of square, a pre-hung unit gives a better seal and longer life.

Will a new front door lower my heating bills?

A well-insulated door with good weatherstripping and a properly adjusted threshold usually reduces drafts noticeably compared with an old, worn door.

Can you install a smart lock with a new door?

Yes. We can install a deadbolt, handleset or smart lock during installation so everything is aligned from the start.

Every Toronto winter brings the same door calls: doors that suddenly stick, drafts that make the front hall freezing, locks that will not turn, and patio doors frozen to the track. The good news is that most winter door problems have simple causes and simple fixes, and many can be prevented with a little work before the deep cold arrives.

This guide covers the most common winter door problems we fix in Toronto homes and businesses, what causes each one, what you can safely do yourself and when to call a door technician.

Why doors act up in a Toronto winter

Three things change when the temperature drops. Wood doors and frames lose moisture and shrink, while some swell from melting snow and humidity indoors. The ground freezes and the house moves slightly, shifting frames out of square. And materials like rubber weatherstripping, lubricants and closer fluid stiffen in the cold. Add road salt on the threshold and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles, and a door that was fine in October can misbehave by January.

7 common winter door problems and how to fix them

1. Door sticking or rubbing the frame

Cause: The frame has shifted or the door has swollen on one side. Loose hinges make it worse.

DIY: Tighten all hinge screws. If a screw spins, it has stripped and needs a longer screw.

Call a pro: If the door still rubs, it needs re-hanging, shimming or planing. Do not plane a wood door in winter without sealing the edge afterwards or it will absorb moisture. See residential door repair.

2. Cold drafts around the door

Cause: Worn or flattened weatherstripping, a damaged door sweep or a door that no longer closes tight against the seals.

DIY: Hold your hand around the edges on a windy day or use a candle to find the leak. Replace adhesive foam strips and a screw-on sweep if they are easy to reach.

Call a pro: If the gap is uneven, the door is out of alignment and new seals alone will not fix it. Natural Resources Canada has useful guidance on home energy efficiency and air sealing.

3. Lock frozen or key will not turn

Cause: Moisture inside the cylinder freezes, or the deadbolt misses the strike because the door has shifted.

DIY: Use a lock de-icer or warm the key (never use boiling water). Afterwards use graphite lubricant, not oil.

Call a pro: If the deadbolt only works when you push or lift the door, the strike or door needs adjusting. Our lock change and door and lock services cover this.

4. Door will not latch

Cause: The latch and strike no longer line up, or a closer is too slow in the cold.

DIY: Check for ice or salt build-up in the strike and on the threshold.

Call a pro: Strike adjustment, hinge work or closer adjustment usually fixes it in one visit.

5. Sliding patio door frozen or dragging

Cause: Ice in the track, worn rollers or a bent track.

DIY: Clear the track of ice and dirt and keep snow away from the outside of the door.

Call a pro: New rollers or track repair restore smooth sliding.

6. Storm door problems

Cause: Broken closers, bent hinges from wind and cracked glass or panels.

Call a pro: See storm door repair.

7. Commercial door slamming or not closing

Cause: Cold closer fluid, worn closers and worn pivots on storefronts.

Call a pro: See commercial door repair and door glass and storefronts.

Before winter: a 15-minute door check for homeowners

Do this once in the fall and most of the problems above never happen.

  1. Tighten hinges. Every screw on every exterior door.
  2. Check the seal. Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points. If it pulls out easily, the seal is weak there.
  3. Look at the sweep. Replace it if it is torn, flattened or missing.
  4. Test the deadbolt. It should throw fully without pushing or lifting the door.
  5. Lubricate locks. Graphite in the cylinder, a little silicone on the latch.
  6. Clean tracks. Patio door tracks and storm door closers.
  7. Check the frame. Look for soft wood or rot at the bottom of the frame and threshold.

When a winter repair turns into a replacement

Most winter problems are repairs. Replacement makes sense when the slab is warped, rotted or rusted through, when the door has been patched every winter for years, or when drafts keep coming back even after new weatherstripping. A modern insulated steel or fiberglass door is also a big security upgrade over an old hollow or damaged door. Read about door replacement in Toronto and recommended door replacements.

Front and entry doors

Entry doors take the most weather. Rotted frames, worn seals and sagging hinges are common. See entry door repair.

Interior doors

Interior doors stick in winter when heating dries the house. Usually a hinge adjustment or light planing fixes it. See interior door repairs and interior wood doors.

Fire doors in buildings

Fire doors in condos and commercial buildings must still close and latch on their own, even in the cold. See fire door installations.

Automatic doors

Snow and ice around sensors and tracks cause stalling. See automatic door repair.

After a break-in

Winter break-ins often damage frames that are already weakened by moisture. We secure the door the same day. See burglary door repairs.

Winter door repair FAQ

Why does my door stick only in winter?

The frame shifts as the ground freezes, and indoor heating dries some parts of the door while melting snow wets others. Tightening hinges often helps; persistent sticking needs re-hanging.

Is it safe to pour hot water on a frozen lock?

No. The water refreezes and makes it worse. Use a lock de-icer or warm the key, then lubricate with graphite.

Can you fix a draft without replacing the door?

Usually yes. New weatherstripping, a sweep and an alignment adjustment fix most drafts.

Do you work in winter on exterior doors?

Yes, all year. We plan exterior work to keep your home or business open to the cold for as little time as possible.

Do you repair garage and sliding gates too?

Yes. See garage door repair and sliding gate repair.

All business owners know the importance of a business’s location and appearance, and maintaining the storefront or exterior is one major aspect of keeping your place of business aesthetically appealing. This involves different kinds of tasks such as constantly checking for peeling paint and repainting if necessary, as well as fixing any malfunctioning commercial doors or windows.

Commercial Door

Although it seems that peeling paint should be at the top of your priority list when maintaining your exterior, most experts think that it’s actually the commercial doors that need more attention and care. Since they serve as the main entryway to your business, the condition of your doors is something you need to pay closer attention to.

How Commercial Doors Add Appeal to Your Business

Whether you are planning to renovate your business storefront or simply planning a new construction project, choosing the right entrance system is very important. After all, it is one of the first things a customer or client will see once they approach your business establishment. It’s also worth noting that the type of commercial doors you choose will set the tone for your customer’s expected experience once they enter the building.

What’s great about commercial door applications is that they provide protection while still offering beauty and functionality. Swinging and sliding glass doors — two of the most common types of commercial doors — blend seamlessly with any building design. They also offer the commercial sector professional-looking yet stylish entryways for the general public.

Another way a commercial door upgrades your business is that it makes it as easy as possible for foot traffic to pass through. Because it lets in the right amount of natural light, the overall mood of the indoor environment gets a significant boost.

What’s even more impressive with these commercial door solutions is they can support your desire for a much higher level of security. Business owners have the option of using a door made of quality materials and with features such as access control and electronic locking systems.

Importance of Commercial Door Repair

Damaged or broken doors are bad for business. Not only do they affect your establishment’s appearance in a negative way, but they also pose a serious security risk for your customers and employees.

If your commercial door has been damaged by a potential break-in, you will need to schedule a commercial door repair service as soon as possible. Doing so will lessen the downtime in your day-to-day operations and prevent another break-in attempt in the future.

Commercial door repair is an excellent investment, since it protects your business and improves its appearance so it then entices more customers. Having well-maintained doors show that you value your business just as much as you value your clients. When your doors function correctly, your employees will feel safe whether they are covering a shift alone or in a group.

You, the business owner, will also have peace of mind knowing that all parts of your business are safeguarded, including valuable equipment, records, employees, and so on.

All told, a secure and enticing storefront has a lot of benefits for any business. The commercial door you invest in should always be an inviting entryway to attract new customers and keep everything safe during off-hours.

Doors Repair Toronto is ready to meet your commercial door needs, given the years of experience in the industry. Get in touch with us to find out how we can install, repair, or maintain your commercial doors to help improve your business.

Commercial Door Basics

Commercial doors are built for traffic, security and code requirements. Hollow metal doors suit back and service entrances; aluminum and glass suit storefronts; fire-rated doors protect stairwells and corridors.

Keeping Them Working

Closers, hinges and exit devices need regular attention. Small adjustments prevent doors from slamming, dragging or failing to latch, and keep exits compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which commercial door is most secure?

A steel door in a properly anchored steel frame with quality hardware.

How often should closers be adjusted?

Exterior doors are the most important feature of any home and business premises, the first part of your premises that visitors will encounter. To generate a positive first impression, you should select exterior doors that are elegant and stylish, even under the worst weather conditions. A well maintained, modern exterior door speaks highly of your professionalism and pride, so it is important to spend your money wisely.

Aesthetic appearance is not the only important factor determining the best exterior door for your needs, because high security and budget are equally important. Exterior doors must be able to withstand the attentions of determined criminals, protecting your premises, possessions and family from harm. Exterior doors are available in a huge range of materials, styles and colors, all with their own inherent advantages and disadvantages.

Wooden Exterior Doors – Traditional Beauty

Wooden exterior doors are still one of the most popular types, providing a good blend of strength and elegance. Wooden doors are available at a relatively affordable price, depending upon the type and quality of wood used. Wood is certainly the most beautiful option, buy wooden exterior doors do have some disadvantages. Wood must be treated regularly, with preservative, paint or varnish, to protect it from the ravages of wind and rain. Neglecting this will cause rotting, and you will need to replace the door after just a few short years.

Wooden doors are very reasonably priced, but going for the cheapest option is false economy, because low quality wood has a tendency to expand in the heat and contract in the cold. This eventually leads to the door sticking and jamming in the summer heat, yet leaving huge gaps in the winter, allowing cold draughts to bypass the insulation.

Good quality wooden exterior doors are constructed from pressure treated timber, containing preservative to make the wood weather resistant for many years. The other downside of wooden doors is the security aspect: Whilst they are strong enough to deter most criminals, determined thieves can force their way in, by breaking the door or the frame.

Steel Exterior Doors – The High Security Door

Where security is the overriding concern, steel exterior doors are an excellent option, traditionally consisting of a steel skin covering the outside of a sturdy wooden frame. Steel exterior doors are expensive, and the extra weight requires an exceptionally strong doorframe, which requires a specialist contractor to fit. Modern variants of the steel door now use stainless steel to create a beautiful door inlaid with glass and intricate details.

Steel exterior doors are extremely resistant to adverse and rough treatment, making them a good option for industrial premises – often; the saving on insurance premiums soon pays for the installation. Aside from the high price, steel doors are not particularly attractive and are very difficult to modify. If you want to fit doorknobs, doorknockers or locks, drilling and cutting the toughened steel is not easy.

Best Exterior Door

UPVC Exterior Doors – Secure and Reasonably Priced

Many modern buildings, especially those with uPVC double-glazing installed, incorporate an exterior door constructed from the same material. This material is durable and strong, and most uPVC exterior doors possess intricate internal locking mechanisms, which engage bolts at the top and bottom of the door. These security bolts ensure that the door is virtually unbreakable when the locks are engaged. UPVC exterior doors are reasonably priced, and are the best choice for energy efficient homes; their tight fit and insulated internal structure allow little heat to escape.

The main disadvantage of uPVC exterior doors is that they can be extremely unattractive, especially if the uPVC discolors with time. The other potential problem is that uPVC breaks down in strong, direct sunlight, and the door will become brittle and crack, if it is not protected.

Aluminum Exterior Doors – A Good Compromise

Aluminum exterior doors are an excellent compromise, combining the advantages of the other types whilst providing fewer disadvantages. Aluminum is a lightweight and functional alternative, combining elegance and practicality. Aluminum doors are painted or powder coated, giving an attractive finish, and aluminum is immune to extremes of weather.

Aluminium exterior doors combine the high security of steel with the internal sliding bolt mechanisms of uPVC doors. Aluminum doors also contain integral insulation, providing excellent energy efficiency, and aluminum is easier to work than steel if accessories are needed. Aluminum exterior doors are an excellent general-purpose door, blending reasonable price and practically. The only minor disadvantage is that aluminium exterior doors lack the natural elegance of wooden doors, but this is far outweighed by the numerous benefits.

Conclusion – Finding Exterior Doors

Exterior doors are available in a wide range of styles and finishes, so there will be a door that combines the right blend of budget, appearance and practicality to suit your home or business. Armed with an idea of your requirements, you will be able to find the perfect exterior doors at a local supplier or online.

Exterior Doors

– Fiberglass exterior doors are a new addition and they have rapidly grown in popularity. Blending the durability of steel with the elegance of wood, they are a great choice if you are seeking to install a new front door.

– Steel doors are still the best option where security is the prime concern, protecting your property and family from harm. This guide explains what to look for in a front entry door.

– Accordion doors are a practical solution where floor space is an issue, and they have moved on from the cheap and tacky vinyl accordion doors of yesteryear.
